The BF-110 was first put into development in the early 1930s as the Messerschmitt entry for the request for a multipurpose fighter called a Kampfzerstörer (battle destroyer). It beat out the Focke-Wulf and Henschel designs and went into production in 1938 with DB 601 engines. The duel DB 601 Es in later variants could provide a combined 2600 Hp on take off. These engines could push the BF-110 to 525 km/h at 4,000 m (13,120 ft).
